2000 Years Old Jewish Heritage in India
18 Days & 17 Nights

Delhi | Kolkata | Varanasi | Agra | Ranthambhore | Jaipur | Kochi | Kumarakom | Mumbai | Delhi

Day 1: Arrive Delhi by International flight
This evening arrive Delhi. Following customs & immigration formalities and baggage collection you will be met by our representative, as you EXIT the ARRIVALS TERMINAL building. You will be escorted to your hotel.

Delhi: The city is sprawled over 1485 sq. kms and is home to approximately 18 million people hailing from all corners of the country. Delhi is divided in two parts, Old & New Delhi. The old city is settled within the remnants of a sturdy defensive wall and spread out towards the West of the famous Red Fort which was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1638 - 1648 A.D . The planning of Delhi started in 1911 under the guidance of Sir Edwin Lutyens, this was following the declaration made by King George V at the Delhi Durbar, that the capital of India was being shifted from Calcutta to Delhi. This was an emphatic way to reinforce the permanence of the British Empire in India. The new city was inaugurated on 9  February,1931.

Delhi is steeped in history, which dates back to 3000 years. 'Indraprastha', the seat of the Pandavas in the early centuries of the era, was situated in Purana Quila and is believed to be Delhi's earliest city.

Day 2: In Delhi
Start your day in the morning visit Judah Hyam Synagogue.

Later proceed for city tour of Old Delhi visiting

Jama Masjid: The great mosque of Old Delhi is the largest in India and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan. Begun in 1644, the mosque was not completed until 1658. It has three great gateways, four angle towers and two minarets standing 40m high and constructed of alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. Broad flights of steps lead up to the imposing gateways. The eastern gateway was originally only opened for the emperor, and is now open on Friday and Muslim festivals.  The general public can enter by the north or south gate. Those people considered unsuitably dressed (bare legs for either men or women) can hire robes at the northern gate. The courtyard of the mosque can hold 25,000 people. It’s possible to climb the southern minaret – if you’re a man or you have one with you.  The view in all directions is superb – Old Delhi, the Red Fort and unfortunately, the polluting factories beyond it across the river, and New Delhi to the south. Chandni Chowk: The main street of Old Delhi is the colorful shopping bazaar known as Chandni Chowk. Enjoy Rickshaw ride in narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk.

Then drive past

Red Fort (Closed on Monday): The red sandstone walls of Lal Qila, the Red Fort, extend for two kms and vary in height from 18m on the river side to 33m on the city side. Shah Jahan started construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. He never completely moved his capital from Agra to his new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi because he was deposed and imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangazeb.
Afternoon city tour of New Delhi visiting

Rajpath:  The Kings Way is another focus of Lutyens New Delhi. It is immensely broad and is flanked on either side of ornamental ponds. The Republic Day parade is held here every 26th January, and millions of people gather to enjoy the spectacle. At the eastern end of the Rajpath lies the India Gate, while at the western end lies Rashtrapati Bhavan, now the president’s residence, but built originally for the viceroy. It is flanked by the two large Secretariat buildings, and these three buildings sit upon a small rise, known as Raisina Hill. India Gate: This 42m high stone arch of triumph stands at the eastern end of the Rajpath. It bears the names of 85,000 Indian Army soldiers who died in the campaigns of WW I the North West frontier operations of the same time and the 1919 Afghan fiasco.

Rashtrapati Bhawan (President house): The official residence of the President of India stands at the opposite end of the Rajpath from India Gate. Completed in 1929, the palace like building is an interesting blend of Mughal and western architectural styles, the most obvious Indian feature being the huge copper dome. To the west of the building is a Mughal garden, which occupies 130 ha.  This garden is only open to the public in February.

Humayun’s Tomb: Built in the mid-16th century by Haji Begum, senior wife of Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, this is an early example of Mughal architecture. The elements in its design – a squat building, lighted by high arched entrances, topped by a bulbous dome and surrounded by formal gardens – were to be refined over the years to the magnificence is thus of great interest for its relation to the later Taj. Humayun’s wife is also buried in the red-and-white sandstone, black-and-yellow marble tomb.  Other tombs in the garden include that of Humayun’s barber and the Tomb of Isa Khan, a good example of Lodi architecture. An excellent view can be obtained over the surrounding country from the terraces of the tomb.
